• Optimising speeds in HDF5 using Pytables

  The problem is with respect to the writing speed of the computer (10 * 32 bit machine) and the postgresql query performance.I will explain the scenario in detail. I have data about 80 Gb (along with approprite database indexes in place). I am trying to read it from Postgresql database and writing it into HDF5 using Pytables.I have 1 table and 5 variable arrays in one hdf5 file.The implementation of Hdf5 is not multithreaded or enabled for symmetric multi processing.I have rented about 10 computers for a day and trying to write them inorder to speed up my data handling. As for as the postgresql table is concerned the overall record size is 140 million and I have 5 primary- foreign key referring tables.I am not using joins as it is not scalable So for a single lookup i do 6 lookup without joins and write them into hdf5 format. For each lookup i do 6 inserts into each of the table and its corresponding arrays. The queries are really simple select * from x.train where tr_id=1 (primary key & indexed) select q_t from x.qt where q_id=2 (non-primary key but indexed) (similarly five queries) Each computer writes two hdf5 files and hence the total count comes around 20 files. Some Calculations and statistics: Total number of records : 14,37,00,000 Total number of records per file : 143700000/20 =71,85,000 The total number of records in each file : 71,85,000 * 5 = 3,59,25,000 Current Postgresql database config : My current Machine : 8GB RAM with i7 2nd generation Processor. I made changes to the following to postgresql configuration file : shared_buffers : 2 GB effective_cache_size : 4 GB Note on current performance: I have run it for about ten hours and the performance is as follows: The total number of records written for each file is about 6,21,000 * 5 = 31,05,000 The bottle neck is that i can only rent it for 10 hours per day (overnight) and if it processes in this speed it will take about 11 days which is too high for my experiments. Please suggest me on how to improve. Questions: 1. Should i use Symmetric multi processing on those desktops(it has 2 cores with about 2 GB of RAM).In that case what is suggested or prefereable? 2. If i change my postgresql configuration file and increase the RAM will it enhance my process. 3. Should i use multi threading.. • Need some clarification with Patterns (DAO x Gateway)

  Me and my colleagues got into this discussion early this morning, and our opinions started to clash a bit, so I decided to get some impartial advice here. One of my colleagues reckons that the DAO should return an object (populated bean). I think it's completely fine when you're returning a recordset with only one line, but think it's overkill if you have to return 10 lines, and create 10 separate objects. I on the other see that the difference between DAO and Gateway pattern is that the gateway pattern will allow you to return a recordset to your business class, which will therefore deal with the recordset data and do whatever it needs to do. My questions here are: Which assumptions are correct? What should the return type be for a DAO (i.e. getContact() - for one record) Should getContacts() (for multiple records) even be on the DAO, if so, what's it's returntype? We seem to be having some sort of confusion about DAO and Gateway Patterns. Should they be used together? Thanks in advance

• Handling OPTIONS request in nginx

  We're using HAProxy as a load balancer at the moment, and it regularly makes requests to the downstream boxes to make sure they're alive using an OPTIONS request: OPTIONS /index.html HTTP/1.0 I'm working with getting nginx set up as a reverse proxy with caching (using ncache). For some reason, nginx is returning a 405 when an OPTIONS request comes in: 192.168.1.10 - - [22/Oct/2008:16:36:21 -0700] "OPTIONS /index.html HTTP/1.0" 405 325 "-" "-" 192.168.1.10 When hitting the downstream webserver directly, I get a proper 200 response. My question is: how to you make nginx pass that response along to HAProxy, or, how can I set the response in the nginx.conf? Thanks!

Boom! Works. Despite documentation stating the files are created automatically and what I have seen before... dunno why but that did the trick. Also re-checked perms on the dir the files live in. As certain as I was, they were correct with named having rw. CentOS 6 (final) dhcpd 4.1.1-P1 named BIND 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 Basic DHCP and DNS functionality are in place on 192.168.111.2. Clients are assigned addresses as intended and can resolve local DNS names as well as Internet names. My problem is that named's zone journal files are not created. chroot: /var/named/chroot I tried placing the zone files in various directories (/var/named/data, /var/named, /var/named/dynamic - no matter which dir with named owning and wide open perms I now get nowhere). Along the way I, at one point, got a permission denied when named tried to create the journal. Resolved the issue by: chown --recursive named:named /var/named chmod --recursive 777 /var/named The journal was then created and here's where things fell apart. I attempted to tame permissions to something more sane and broke it. Once changed and having restarted named it threw an error indicating the journal was out of sync (or something to that affect)... didn't matter since this is a new setup so I deleted it and now it is not recreated. Now though I see no errors in /var/log/messages, my chrooted /var/log/named.log, or chrooted /var/log/named.debug. I increased the debug level with 'rndc trace' - no love. Increased trace to 10, still nothing. SELinux is disabled... • Conceptual question about NSAutoreleasePools

  In my Cocoa program, wouldn't a really simple way of dealing with autoreleased objects be to just create a timer object inside the app delegate that calls the following method e.g. every 10 seconds: if (pool) { // Release & drain the current pool to free the memory. [pool release]; } // Create a new pool. pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; The only problems I can imagine are: 1) If the above code runs in a separate thread, an object might get autoreleased between the release call to the old pool and the creation of the new pool - that seems highly unlikely though. 2) It's obviously not that efficient, because the pool might get released if there's nothing in it. Likewise, in the 10 second gap, many many objects might be autoreleased, causing the pool to grow a lot. Still, the above solution seems pretty suitable to small and simple projects. Why doesn't anybody use it? What's the best practice of using NSAutoreleasePools?

• Drawing bezier curve with limited subdivisions in OpenGL

  Is it possible to tell OpenGL to draw a 4 degree (5 control points) bezier curve with 10 subdivisions? I was trying with this: point ctrlpts[] = {..., ..., ..., ...}; glMap1f(GL_MAP1_VERTEX_3, 0, 1, 3, 5, ctrlpts); glBegin(GL_LINE_STRIP); for (i = 0; i <= 30; i++) glEvalCoord1f((GLfloat) i/30.0); glEnd(); But this just draws the curve nicely. I am thinking that I want the algorithm inside the bezier curve to draw only until 10 subdivisions and then stop. The line should look a little facet.

  I am trying to use JQuery to pull a binary file from a webserver, parse it in Javascript and display the contents. I can get the file ok and parse some of the file correctly. How ever I am running into trouble with one byte not coming out as expected. I am parsing the file a byte at a time, it is correct until I get to the hex value B6 where I am getting FD instead of B6. Function to read a byte data.charCodeAt(0) & 0xff; File As Hex: 02 00 00 00 55 4C 04 00 B6 00 00 00 The format I want to parse the file out into. short: 0002 short: 0000 string: UL short: 0004 long: 0000B6 Any hints as to why the last value is incorrect?

But my problem is that which is show by black lines.if the player find the first word which is "DOG". he click the Two UIButtons in Sequence,but not press the Third one in Sequence.(as show by black line).so here i want that when player press the any UIButtons which is not in Sequence then remove the previous text(which is "DO") of UILabel and now the Text of UILabel is only "G" . • Adjusting Timezone - Convert XML DateTime to SQL DateTime

  We are using TypedDataSet in our application. Data is passed to procedure in form of XML for insert/update. Now after populating DE with data, datetime remains the same though timezone information is added as below. Date in DB: 2009-10-29 18:52:53.43 Date in XML: 2009-10-29T18:52:53.43-05:00 Now when I am trying to convert below XML to SQL DateTime it is adjusting 5 hours and I am getting 2009-10-29 23:52:53.430 as the final output, which is wrong. Need to find a way to extract datetime from below XML snippet ignoring timezone.
